Introduction

The JAA TO AI Awareness in Aviation course is intended to equip all trainees and participants with current and practical knowledge on AI application in aviation:

It tackles the current regulatory landscape, best cases in industrial applications, organisational aspects of AI introduction into operations. It is designed to build an understanding, regulatory alignment and to serve as a stepping stone towards a dedicated EASA PART-AI

This course introduces participants about artificial intelligence in the aviation industry, and addresses the new requirements of the EU AI Act, including the integration of AI literacy into dedicated training courses.

After completing the course, participants will have an understanding of the foundational concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on the current and future applications of AI in aviation.

Participants will be able to describe possible AI applications, identify operational benefits and impacts, outline possible safety, ethical, data management, and legal implications of using AI systems. Additionally, the course will cover the AI-related activities and documents from EASA.

Course Content

  • What is AI and AI fundamental concepts
  • Examples of current and prospective applications of AI in aviation: air ops, drones, ATM, airports
  • Relevant articles of EU I Act and EASA AI Roadmap
  • Regulatory framework, legal implications and issues of AI
  • AI assessment following EASA requirements, addressing safety, human performance, legal aspects
  • Analysis of legal liability (product vs. professional liability) of AI and its impact on Just Culture

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamental concepts of AI, including terminology, technologies, enablers and barriers.
  • Describe current best practices of AI in aviation, pondering possible benefits and limitations.
  • Identify safety, human, ethical (data management), legal issues.
  • Develop their own AI strategy.
  • Identify regulatory requirements applicable to their own AI strategy.
  • Align organisations’ AI initiatives with relevant regulations and EASA expected roadmap.

The main target audience of this course is:

  • Industry: airlines, service providers, airports.
  • CAAs.
  • Representatives of stakeholders (e.g. pilots’ associations).
  • Senior managers.
  • Staff involved in regulatory oversight (e.g. deployers).

Pre-requisites

There are no specific AI prerequisites are identified for participation in the course.
