Introduction
This course is intended for anyone working in aviation who has a responsibility for managing fatigue risk. This 2-day course begins with an introduction to the science of fatigue and alertness management, before describing the requirements of Part-ORO with respect to FRM. ways that operators can manage the problem, for example managing fatigue under the operator’s Safety Management System, or by establishing a system for Fatigue Risk Management (FRM).
Day 2 of the course describes the FRM predictive, reactive and proactive processes that an operator can establish to collect and track fatigue data. Roster fatigue metrics and fatigue safety performance indicators are described with extensive examples.
Course Content
The course will cover the following topics:
a) crew and management responsibilities for managing fatigue.
b) the basics of fatigue including sleep fundamentals and the effects of disturbing the circadian rhythms;
c) the causes of fatigue;
d) the effect of fatigue on performance;
e) fatigue countermeasures;
f) the influence of lifestyle on fatigue;
g) sleep disorders and their possible treatments;
h) effects of long range operations and heavy short range schedules on individuals;
i) the effect of operating through and within multiple time zones;
j) requirements of Part-ORO with respect to FRM;
k) FRM predictive, reactive and proactive processes;
l) collection of fatigue data (both subjective and objective) to feed the FRM system;
m) roster fatigue metrics;
n) fatigue safety performance indicators;
o) use of fatigue reporting systems and implementing mitigations;
p) content and delivery of a fatigue training programme.
Activities:
The course is highly interactive, with an emphasis on learning through discovery and discussion. The course features incident investigations, reviews of fatigue reports, discussions and various tasks designed to make the training engaging.
Learning Objectives
Upon completing the course delegates will have a sound understanding of the science behind FRM, the requirements of Part-ORO with respect to FRM, the components of fatigue risk management and the processes (predictive, proactive, reactive) used to identify, measure, mitigate and manage fatigue risk within their operation.

Participants are kindly requested to bring a laptop to the course to access course material which will only be provided in electronic format.
