Introduction

This course provides the delegate with a general overview and basic working knowledge of International (Airborne) Search and Rescue operations. The course is designed to follow international best practices defined in both ICAO Annex 12, and the IAMSAR manuals, and the learning process is assisted by practical case study exercises conducted by the delegates under the supervision of the tutor. 

On completion of the course, the delegate should have achieved a sufficient working knowledge of the basic requirements needed to set up an effective SAR system, locally or nationally.

Course Content

The course covers, in detail, the following:

  • Philosophy of SAR and International SAR Conventions
  • State/National SAR Plans and Procedures
  • SAR Manuals
  • Operational control of SAR
  • Responsibilities of a SSARO (Senior Search And Rescue Officer)
  • Rescue Co-Ordination Centres – Aviation Operations
  • International SAR boundaries and areas of responsibility
  • SAR Satellites
  • SAR Agencies and their capabilities/Aircraft/Assets
  • Basic SAR Charts
  • Initial Search Procedures and Rescue Planning
  • SAR Top Cover
  • Ditching and Ditching Assistance

It also includes an Interactive Syndicate Table Top Rescue Co-Ordination Exercise on Day 3.

Learning Objectives

To provide delegates with a thorough basic knowledge of how Search and Rescue is organised at Local, National and International level, and to develop an awareness of available SAR assets, their deployment, and co-ordination, to affect a rescue.

Pre-requisites
