Introduction

The Aviation Data-Driven Decision Making (AD3M) course is designed to prepare aviation professionals to generate reports and interpret results for making effective decisions, managing risk and setting priorities for different civil aviation activities, operations, or procedures.

The course consists of two parts, a prerequisite online part: Fundamentals of Aviation Data-driven Decision Making (AD3M), to explore the fundamental concepts behind data-driven decision making, followed by a classroom part: Application of Aviation Data-driven Decision Making (AD3M), to apply the concepts to practical scenarios and real-life situations.

NOTE: Registration form to a classroom delivery session below will include the pre-requisite Part 1. You may also wish to complete Part 1 as a standalone, but it remains a prerequisite for attending the Classroom course, Part 2. Course Content

Part 1: Online Course - Fundamentals of AD3M (estimate 10-15 hours)

At the end of this eLearning course participants will be able to apply the techniques of collecting, managing and analysing aviation data in order to generate reports and interpret results for making effective decisions, managing risk and setting priorities for different civil aviation activities related to safety and air navigation.

The online course is divided into 5 modules. Each module closes with a short quiz that allows participants to recall the content and ensure the reinforcement of the key concepts before moving on to the next module.

Module 1, Introduction

  • Define aviation data-driven decision-making
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using this approach
  • Identify the steps in the data-driven decision-making process

Module 2, Data Management

  • Define the components of data management including data collection and data quality
  • Prepare, organize and manage data in order to conduct statistical analysis

Module 3, Metrics and Indicators

  • Define indicators
  • Determine what makes good indicators
  • Define key performance indicators (KPIs)

Module 4, Basic Statistical Analysis

  • Identify commonly used statistical analysis techniques
  • Differentiate among the various statistical analysis techniques

Module 5, Visualization and Reporting

  • Identify the suitable tools for reporting and visual representation of analysis results

Part 2: Classroom Course – Application of AD3M

The 4-day classroom course provides practical examples and exercises using AD3M methods and allows participants to apply the course concepts to a variety of practical scenarios and real-life situations. During the classroom course, trainees will be provided specific readings, handouts and course material, including case studies, and access to aviation data for relevant classroom exercises.

The classroom course contains the following modules:

Introduction and Review

Recall key concepts from the online course, and connect to the goal and objectives of the classroom course.

The Problem with Data

Given data management challenges, upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to manage aviation data optimally for their needs, according to best practices.

Visualization and Reporting Techniques

Given data analysis results, upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to select the best visualization tool for reporting results, according to best practices.

Development of Safety Indicators

Given their own experience and organization, upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to develop safety indicators for their organization, according to best practices.

Learning Objectives

Participants who complete the AD3M Programme (online and classroom course) will be able to apply best practices of data-driven decision making in aviation and define suitable key performance indicators (KPIs) in civil aviation sectors.

Upon completion of the Programme, participants will be able to apply aviation data-driven decision making principles and methods in their professional roles.

Trainees are required to achieve a minimum average of 80% for the online course quizzes (one at the end of each module). A copy of the certificate must be provided as a prerequisite to the classroom course. A minimum of 80% must be achieved in the classroom course to receive a certificate of successful completion.

Who should take this course

Aviation professionals and managers from Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs), airlines, aerodrome operators, and other service providers involved in collecting, managing, reporting or making decisions using aviation data.

Pre-requisites

  • A pre-requisite to attend the classroom course is a completion of the online course.
  • Working knowledge of Excel software in order to generate graphs and charts. This is required for the exercises and assessments. The instructors will not teach Excel during the course.
  • PowerPoint will also be used. Basic knowledge of PowerPoint is required.

Required preparation:

  • Trainees must bring a laptop to the course that allows USB plugins. Trainees will be provided most course material on USB drives in an effort to remain paperless as much as possible.
  • Trainees must have Microsoft Office on their computers including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

4 days, starting at 09:00 on all days, finishing at 17:00 on the last day.
