Wildlife Hazard Management (WHM) - WBA

Introduction

The Wildlife & Bird Hazard Management and Control is a kick-off course that is part of the Birds/Wildlife Strike Prevention Conference in Warsaw (19 – 23 November 2018), and can only be taken in combination with the plenary sessions of the conference. The training will be held in the Polish CAA training facility in Warsaw Poland.

This course provides delegates with a comprehensive overview of the key principles that should be applied in order to practice effective bird and wildlife hazard management at aerodromes.

The course covers all relevant facets of wildlife hazard control and management, including: advice from an industry best practice perspective, operational limitations, how to minimize bird hazard attractants, identifying trends and patterns, standards and practices, record keeping for risk management purposes and how to design a wildlife hazard management plan.

A voluntarily examination is offered, awarded with a JAA TO certification of accomplishment when successfully completed. Our training satisfies the instructor recommendations as mentioned in ICAO Doc. 9137 - Airport Services Manual, Part 3, paragraph 4.9.3.

Participants willbe encouraged to take part in discussions and practicle examples. 

A voluntarely multiplechoice examination is provided. Allocated time frame is 30 minutes. Pass mark will be 70% and leads to a JAA TO certification of accomplishment.

Learning Objectives

The course is designed to assist delegates to understand all facets of wildlife hazard control and management in an aerodrome environment to enable them to design and implement a suitable wildlife management program drawing on industry best practices on how to minimize wildlife hazard attractants, identifying trends and patterns and record keeping for risk management purposes.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to demonstrate that they are:

  • Acquainted with relevant ICAO and EASA regulations, recommendations and standards related to aviation wildlife management;
  • Able to appreciate the main ecological and biological factors related to the wildlife strike risk;
  • Acquainted with the various methods of detecting, monitoring and recording wildlife species, their behaviour and habitat;
  • Aquatinted with the various pro-active and active control measures;
  • Able to understand the wildlife risk factors and limitations related to aircraft and aerodrome operations;
  • Able to identify the relevant stakeholders;
  • Able to provide the methods of assessing the wildlife strike risk and how to place these in the aerodrome safety management system.
  • Able to design a wildlife hazard management plan

Who should take this course

This course will be of great benefit to any aerodrome staff involved in any aspect of aerodrome bird and wildlife hazard management and control, including:

  • NAA / CAA inspectors and staff
  • Aerodrome operations operatives and management;
  • Dedicated bird and/or wildlife control managers, co-ordinators and/or operatives;
  • Aerodrome planning, maintenance or quality and environment staff;
  • ATC staff, including management;

Pre-requisites

No previous experience of airside operations or aerodrome bird/wildlife control is necessary, however an affinity with wildlife hazard reduction is recommended.
