RELTA consists of two components (Listening and Speaking). The Listening Test takes approximately 45 minutes. The Speaking Test takes approximately 30 minutes. Information on the test format is available on this page: http://www.relta.org/relta/test-format.

RMIT English Language Test for Aviation (RELTA) is an English language test designed to assess pilots, air traffic controllers and light aircraft pilots for licensing purposes, as required by the ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements. RELTA uses aviation scenarios to reliably and effectively measure English language skills in both face-to-face and radiotelephony communication.

Invigilation of candidates during tests:

The RELTA test will be actively invigilated by a an RMIT-certified JAA TO Examiner. During the test:

  • No books, bags, papers, cameras, mobile phones, or other electronic devices will be allowed in the test room.

  • Candidates will not be allowed to leave the test room once the test has commenced.

  • The Speaking component will be recorded.

  • Candidates may not refer to any papers brought into the test room

Cheating:

Any candidates found cheating on any test will not be allowed to continue the test. Activities considered as cheating include, but are not limited to, the following: looking at another candidate’s paper; talking to another candidate during the test; taking any written notes into the test; using any aid; etc. The Test supervisor will immediately notify the Aviation Operations office in Melbourne of the incident. Candidates found cheating will not be issued a result and will be reported to their management.

Results & Certificates:

Test results may take up to 15 working days of the test date to be finalised. Candidates will not receive results from JAA TO. However, once results have been finalised for a whole class, candidates can obtain their result from http://www.relta.org/resources/relta-results. Candidates should note that their final score is determined by the lowest score awarded to any of the six ICAO criteria.

Certificates will be printed by JAA TO and delivered per post to the candidate. It is the responsibility of the candidate or the candidate's organisation to present the Certificate to the National Aviation Authority for recognition. Electronic copies of certificates will not be made available to any candidate.

Re-sitting RELTA:

Candidates must satisfy the requirements of both the Listening and Speaking components to meet the requirements of RELTA. Candidates who achieve one component of RELTA, but not overall, cannot carry these results forward. Both components of the test must be re-tested if re-sitting.
Candidates who do not satisfy the requirements will not be permitted to re-sit the test for a period of sixty days after the first attempt. The purpose of the waiting period is to allow candidates to further develop and practise their language skills.

Complaints:
The RELTA Candidate Complaint Form is available at http://www.relta.org/downloads/RELTA_Candidate_Complaint_Form.pdf. Any candidate who wishes to lodge a complaint concerning the conduct of the RELTA test should submit it to JAA TO, who will notify Melbourne Operations and conduct an investigation of the complaint the result of which shall also be conveyed to the Melbourne Operations Office.
